What to wear with a chestnut horse?

what to wear with a chestnut horse?

Chestnuts are the hardest colour horse to coordinate with, so often going with a simple white or neutral is best, but blues and greens can pair well. Let’s walk through some quick tips and then look at some oufits to see what will work best for you!

  • White and very light colour neutrals are great options! This will make your orange pony really pop!

  • Black works much the same as white and acts as a neutral base to highlight your horse’s coat.

  • Generally, if you are going to go with a colour, cooler tones are best (blues and green) but be mindful of the shade. Generally emerald and jewel tones clash with chestnut bright coats, instead go for a pastel or darker shade (navy/hunter green)

  • Lastly, maroon can be a good option in the fall when there are fewer green tones in the environment.

  • Keep it simple! While you might be able to get away with fun colours or patterns with a bay or black horse, chesnuts are tricky and your best bet is to tone down your outfit and let their coat shine through!

Here you can see that blue is a beautiful tone to pair with a chestnut, either in a light pastel shade or a deep navy! It contrasts beautifully against the green and gold tones in the surrounding foliage and makes your chestnut pop out, while not clashing with them! It is a classic and tried and true colour to wear at your session.

White and very light neutral tones are my first go-to with chestnuts! They really make them pop in the images and the white acts to balance out the bright colours coming from their coat. It is an excellent colour for the spring and summer and brings a soft, fun and fairy-tale feel to your images and session! Even better is to pair a light coloured top with darker navy or black jeans, you can’t go wrong with this classic combo!

Dark shades, such as navy (left), maroon (middle), and black (right) will make your horse pop! These colours work best in fall and winter and give a deep, romantic and elegant feel to your images!

While there might be colours you should stay away from with a chestnut (orange, red, yellow, red, most of your warm tones), you can still have a lot of fun with your outfit choices and compliment their beautiful coat beautifully! So don’t fret if you have a chestnut, hopefully this blog post helped you and if you book a session with me you can always reach out for more guidance, I’m more than happy to help!
