Raven | Riverfront Equestrian | Fine Art Black Background Portraits by Calgary Equestrian Photographer
Raven is here to challenge your mindset that Black Background Portraits are only a summer time affair! These beautiful portraits were captured in March on a frigid day, and they couldn’t have been more perfect! Despite still being a young, and slightly timid filly, Raven brought her best model face and we were able to capture some incredibly darling portraits that showed off her rich black coat and kind eye.
Wondering if winter fine art portraits would be right for you? There’s a few scenarios where I think winter portraits can not only be a great option, but actually be better than summer portraits!
1. Your horse is black and gets really sunbleached in the summer
Capturing their coat in the winter will allow you to capture that rich and true black, instead of their more bay summer coat.
2. Your horse is full body clipped
A fully body clipped horse will look stunning in their portraits, regardless of the season. The only time I wouldn’t recommend this is if you horse drastically changes colours when clipped and you don’t like their clipped coat colour.
3. Your horse is not clipped at all and doesn’t grow a woolly mammoth coat
There is nothing wrong with a little bit of fuzz! Raven isn’t clipped in her images and still looks sleek and adorable!
4. Your horse rubs out their mane and tail in the summer, or gets really bad welts from bug bites
If your horse is prone to rubbing their mane/tail out in the summer, or reacts badly to bugs, or maybe they are prone to getting sun burnt, winter could be a great time to capture them at their best!
5. You have an incredibly busy summer schedule
My summer schedule is also very busy, which means limited availability for dates. Winter on the other hand is wide open and you get your pick of dates, I am happy to work with your schedule rather than the other way around.
