Winter Equestrian Portraits with Wilma & Echo
The most common misconception I hear from people is that winter is not a good season for photos. While I love a beautiful summer evening or a fall afternoon as much as the next person, I don’t think anyone should be writing winter off too quickly! And if these beautiful images don’t convince you of that, let me tell you why…
You get your pick of dates, and you don’t have to wait up late for a beautiful sunset! Winter will always be the least busy time for photographers, which means those who do book can pick their date from a pretty open schedule. Generally the photographer will be able to fit into your schedule, not the other way around. And in summer, you have to wait until ~9/10pm for the prime golden hour for photos. Winter is far more reasonable around 5pm!
It is beautiful! This is a hill I will die on. Winter is stunning and nobody can convince me otherwise. Especially if you get a day with fresh snow, or even better hoar frost on the trees!
Snow acts as a giant reflector, making your photos bright and airy, and helping you and your horse look your most beautiful!
It’s the best time of year to capture white background photos, as the snow and generally overcast skies make for an easy white backdrop.
There is just something special about winter. I’m not quite sure how to put it into words, maybe it’s the fact that the cold and colourless environment help highlight the warmth, joy, and life that is present in the connection between horse & rider. Maybe it’s just that fuzzy horses look so cute. Either way, this je ne sais quoi factor makes it extra special.
No bugs. Need I say more?
And if I still haven’t convinced you that winter photos might be the way to go, Wilma and Echo’s beautiful pictures certainly will! These two were a beautiful partnership to capture. Despite being 24, Echo was a stunning model and you would never tell his age, but the deep connection between him and Wilma was clear evidence of their many years of companionship and trust.
