Horse & Rider Session // Sandra & Rocky

Some sessions just remind me so deeply of why what I do is so valuable and why I wouldn’t want to do anything else. When I was approached about photographing Rocky’s goodbye session I had a good feeling that this would be one of those sessions and I was not wrong. This session was photographed a few days before Rocky crossed over the rainbow bridge a week ago. Goodbye sessions are something difficult to speak about; no one wants to think about the inevitable day that they say goodbye to a dear friend, but yet they are so important. The evening wasn’t sad, there were smiles and laughter, and joy in remembering the life of this beautiful horse. Of course there were sad moments, and there is equal beauty in capturing those, the emotions that fill us as we face parting with our companions. I felt honoured to capture the beautiful partnership of Sandra and Rocky, and their dear friendship.

“Rocky was my first horse - I am at peace knowing he is pain-free and running free now.”

Sandra shared with me that Rocky was an incredible horse, previously a three-day eventer and a true teacher for her. He had been well-loved by many in his lifetime and had taught many riders in his time. He was patient and kind, though not without his quirks and character. His eyes were bright and kind and for a 27-year-old horse, he was in remarkably good condition. It was clear that he had lived a good life and been loved beyond belief, having touched the lives of many. It was obvious he was a dear companion to Sandra and that they shared a beloved friendship, having been Sandra’s horse for a little over two years, though they had known each other much longer. There was a beautiful quiet moment, bathed in sunlight and surrounded by bird song when Sandra rested against Rocky’s shoulder and a single tear was shed. It truly reminded me of everything these horses give us and the gratitude we feel to have them in our lives.

Rest in Peace Rocky.

“{he was} a friend, a companion, a teacher and care giver.”
