Laura & Beanz

I was excited when Laura booked portraits following her session at Amberlea Harvest. I had known her with her mare Electra for many years but was looking forward to capturing her bond with her new gelding Beanz. I arrived at the familiar Killerney Farms and met Beanz and Laura in the barn. We quickly set out on the hunt to find a beautiful fall background for their portraits.

Unfortunately, most of the leaves that had been present the week before were now on the ground and the trees were mostly bare. What we lacked in foliage though was made up for in beautiful golden light. Walking down the gravel road, we sought out the few patches of trees that still held onto their orange and golden leaves. 

Laura and Beanz were big perfect models, I didn’t even need to ask them to pose, their connection was so wonderful that it created perfect genuine moments. These are the moments I treasure and love to capture. Beanz was, of course, a bit of a character, he reminded me very much of my own gelding, as he had a very active brain and loved to be moving around. He was full of personality and one of my favourite images captured was when Laura is snuggling his nose and he licks her back! Probably wasn’t ideal for her white shirt but it was such a great moment to capture as a photographer! All his personality allowed the moments to be authentic and real.

We finished the session with a few black background images of Beanz. Laura has been worried about his newly clipped coat looking imperfect in the images but he looked absolutely stunning. He had changed so much in muscle and condition even since I had last seen him at Harvest in September. It was beyond clear that these two were building a special connection and a strong partnership. I’m certain that in a short time they will be a force to be reckoned with in the show ring.
